Care and Share Initiative
Milton Junior School & Waman Guana
As Founder of Milton Junior School, I am acutely aware that not every child is able to get the education he or she deserves.
By creating our ‘Care and Share Initiative’, we are advocating for a more inclusive future for everyone.
Tony Milton - Founder and Director
Waman Guana is a Humanitarian and Missionary Project located in the Chimoio district, which cares for more than 250 orphans and vulnerable children.
At Milton Junior School, we want our students to develop compassion and empathy for those less fortunate than themselves. We reached out to Waman Guana to see how we could support them and our ‘Care and Share Initiative’ was born!
At Milton Junior School, we believe it is important to share knowledge and to encourage others to learn. We asked our students to prepare Mathematics and English lessons to give to their peer groups at Waman Guana.
By teaching children of a similar age to themselves, our students learn valuable lessons about compassion and empathy as well as developing confidence in their own abilities.
The children at Waman Guana proved to be enthusiastic students and were keen to show our students how much they had learnt. Research has found that learning from other children is enormously beneficial to a child’s self esteem and confidence and this was certainly evident as our Waman Guana hosts stepped up to the blackboard!
We believe that all of the students took something valuable from the lessons and we look forward to more educational exchanges in the future.
Our students also collected donations from families and friends to give to the residents of Waman Guana. Items ranged from books, pens and toys, to clothes, shoes and hygeine products. We were also able to bring some food and drinks to keep everyone refreshed throughout the day.
We want our students to understand that ‘sharing is caring’ and that positive action goes a long way to making others feel more included and respected in our society.
It is important for all children to understand the value of what they have, to not take their good fortune for granted and to behave with compassion towards those less fortunate than themselves.
We may not be able to change the world but by caring for and sharing our good fortune with those around us, we can make a positive difference right on our doorstep!
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone at Waman Guana for giving us such a warm welcome. Thank you to all of the students that took part in our lessons and to the rest of the residents for their interaction throughout the day. We look forward to seeing you all again very soon!
We hope to develop our Care and Share Initiative over the coming years and look forward to sharing our journey with you.
